Help your students kick the clickety-click habit
VoiceThread Courses is a complete courseware experience built around authentic human interaction. Modules, assignments, grading, analytics, and rubrics, with no LMS or institutional license required.
$24/month to run unlimited courses. $4 per student who joins.
First, what's a VoiceThread?
A VoiceThread is a place to have authentic human conversations about media, pretty much any kind of media. You upload slides, video, documents, or images, and people respond with voice, video, and annotation comments woven directly into the material.
Online discussion is broken,
and everyone knows it
Students don't need more polls, quizzes, and text boxes that let them paste AI-generated responses and move on. They don't need another platform that trains them in the same shallow, social-media-style engagement they already practice for hours every day.
What they need, and what research overwhelmingly supports, is the riskier, more rewarding work of authentic human interaction. Speaking with their own voice. Showing their face. Responding to a real person, not a prompt. That's where personal growth happens, and it's exactly what most online tools make easy to avoid.
VoiceThread Courses is designed around the opposite principle: make authentic participation the path of least resistance. When students respond with voice and video, annotate in real time, and engage in multimodal conversation, there's no shortcut. No AI detection tools required. Just real people, doing real work.
Everything you need to run a course
Structured like the courseware you're used to, but built around human interaction instead of text boxes.
Modules
Organize your course into structured weekly segments. Content and assignments flow in the order you design, giving students a clear path through the material.
Formal Assignments
Create assignments that ask students to build VoiceThreads, comment on peer work, or engage with your content. Each assignment type produces authentic, multimodal evidence of learning.
Quick Grader & Gradebook
An efficient grading tool built for multimodal work, with a course gradebook that tracks student progress across all assignments. Spend less time clicking through submissions.
Course Analytics
See who's engaged and who needs a nudge. Track participation, completion, and engagement across your entire course at a glance.
Rubrics
Build rubrics for consistent, transparent assessment. Attach them to assignments so students know what's expected and you can grade with clarity.
Student Gallery
A dedicated space for students to share and give structured, tracked feedback on peer work. Peer review becomes visible, accountable, and substantive.
Upgraded Student Accounts
While enrolled in your course, students automatically receive upgraded accounts: 10-minute comment recording, threads up to 50 slides, threaded commenting, and secure sharing. Nothing for them to configure and nothing extra to buy beyond their seat.
The only course platform where authenticity is the default
Every text-based discussion tool in education and training has the same problem: students can generate responses with AI in seconds. Faculty know it. Students know it. The result is a performance of learning, not learning itself.
VoiceThread's multimodal format changes the equation. When students respond with their voice while annotating content in real time, they engage cognitive processes that can't be offloaded. Speaking while pointing, explaining while demonstrating — the simultaneity reveals authentic understanding.
This isn't a workaround or a detection tool. It's architecture. The format itself makes genuine participation easier than faking it.
"VoiceThread showed me and my students that there was another way to learn that was much more meaningful and rigorous. Through its simplicity and practicality, my students and I were able to engage in higher level conversations."Dr. Daisy SamVeteran Spanish Teacher
"Weekly VoiceThread discussions tied to lab prep readings increased engagement, accountability, and confidence. All students passed their clinical checkoffs on the first attempt."McMurray (2025)Fundamentals Clinical Skills Lab

Build your course
Add modules, create assignments, attach rubrics. Structure it the way you'd structure any course — the interface is designed to feel familiar.
Invite students

VoiceThread Courses across disciplines
Wherever authentic human interaction matters more than clicking through content.
Health Sciences
Clinical case analysis, patient communication practice, and safe reflection on clinical experiences. Develop empathy and rapport skills that text-based tools can't touch.
Language Learning
Authentic speaking practice, pronunciation feedback, and cultural exchange. Students practice with their actual voice, not a text box.
Visual & Performing Arts
Critique, demonstration, and portfolio review. Feedback that points to specific moments and details, not generic written comments.
Business Education
Case discussions, presentation skills, and team collaboration. Students practice communication skills employers actually hire for.
STEAM
Lab demonstrations, problem-solving walkthroughs, and peer review. Annotation tools let students explain reasoning while pointing to their work.
Theology & Humanities
Seminar-style discussion and reflective practice. Voice and video create small-seminar intimacy, even in large online courses.
Training & Professional Development
Onboarding, certification prep, and skills practice where people demonstrate competence out loud instead of clicking through modules. Evidence of real understanding, built into the format.
Community & Nonprofit Education
Volunteer training, community programs, and mission-driven learning. Run a structured course without an IT department, a procurement process, or an LMS.
One subscription. Pay per student only when they join.
Everything is included for $24/month. Seats are the only other cost, and only for formal courses.

Contact Us for a QuoteFrequently asked questions
What do my students need to join my course?
A VoiceThread account and a course seat. The seat is consumed when they enter the course. If you've added seats to your account, one of yours is used automatically; if not, the student is prompted to purchase their own for $12.
Who should pay for seats, me or my students?
Your call. Adding seats yourself at $4 each is cheaper per student and means your students are never asked for payment. Letting students purchase their own at $12 means nothing out of your pocket.
Can I use VoiceThread without running a formal course?
Yes. Your subscription includes unlimited VoiceThreads that you can share with anyone at no per-person cost. Seats only come into play when you run a formal Course with enrollment, assignments, and grading.
Can I teach students under 18?
Students aged 13 to 17 can participate when you purchase seats for them; VoiceThread does not sell to anyone under 18, so don't rely on the $12 self-purchase option for minors. Children under 13 cannot create VoiceThread accounts or join courses under this plan. Schools serving younger students need a VoiceThread K-12 license, which handles student accounts and parental consent properly.
Is there a contract?
No. The subscription is monthly and you can cancel anytime. Your work is tied to your account and travels with it. Work submitted to a course assignment is controlled by the course administrator.
